Yorkshire’s leading augmented reality (AR) developers, Peel Interactive, will unveil their latest commercial product, A Giant Adventure, at The Alnwick Garden on July 20.
The ground breaking digitally interactive trail encourages younger visitors to use a special app to discover virtual clues and objects, as well as the physical installations – all belonging to a giant and his friends – on a magical mystery tour of the award winning garden. A Giant Adventure is the second augmented reality installation designed by Peel Interactive for The Alnwick Garden.
Said Jessica Wright, md of Peel Interactive: “This product showcases perfectly our pioneering work in mixing the digital and physical worlds to create a truly memorable family day out. Parents and children simply need to download the app – available on the App Stores when they arrive – to their phones, before embarking on the trail.
“The app uses augmented reality technology to trigger key points around The Garden which are activated once a phone is targeted on them, ‘unlocking’ the fun content – which in this case is our loveable ‘giant’ 3D animations. There are several virtual and physical installations which families can hunt down, including, a giant squirrel in the iconic treehouse, a giant mouse scurrying out of a giant boot, a talking skull at the gateway to Alnwick’s famous Poison Garden and even the giant himself!
“All our digital experiences are designed to meet our client’s objectives, be that to embed specified educational content and bring history back to life, as in the case of our York Mansion House interactive cooking experience and Parliamentary Education Centre installation – where Churchill and Queen Victoria come to life in an animated ‘horrible histories’ style AR experience. Or, to create exciting experiences, as in the case of our products for the Tui Marella Cruise Ships and The Alnwick Garden, where you can actually dance with the giant! Our apps also incorporate fun photo opportunities to ensure virtual adventures can be captured and shared.”
The Alnwick Garden was first laid down in 1750 by the 1st Duke of Northumberland, who employed celebrated gardener, Capability Brown to landscape the parkland adjoining Alnwick Museum. Eventually falling into disrepair, the gardens closed in 1950. The current Duchess of Northumberland, Jane Percy, spearheaded a £42M re-development of the gardens, which was finally completed in 2006, and which saw the gardens earn the title of Northumberland’s Top Large Visitor Attraction, 2017.
