The team at Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky distillery are celebrating after their Cream Liqueur won an award at the prestigious Liqueur Masters awards.
Hunmanby based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery entered its Cream Liqueur into the competition for the first time this year and were rewarded with a silver medal. The accolade follows a coveted silver award from the International Wines and Spirits Competition (IWSC) and a gold star from the Guild of Fine Foods in the Great Taste awards earlier this year.
“Whereas most cream liqueurs only use new make spirit, ours marries fully matured whisky with our light and fruity new make spirit and the highest butterfat content possible to make a deliciously creamy drink. It’s another example of how we’re respecting tradition but doing things differently, and we’re delighted that industry professionals have rewarded our approach with a silver medal,” said Jenni Ashwood, Spirit of Yorkshire’s marketing director.
The Liqueurs Masters competition is organised by The Spirits Business magazine. Commenting on the calibre of entries, judge, Nicola Thomson said: In general, the standard of the flights we sampled was really high, compared with previous years. There was a lot of freshness of flavours and a wonderful balance between the acidity and alcohol levels.”
Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur, 20% vol., costs £25.50 for a 70cl bottle. It is available online from spiritofyorkshire.com and selected specialist retailers throughout the UK.
Established in 2016, Spirit of Yorkshire is one of only a handful of distilleries that grows the barley for whisky production. It is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor and business partner, David Thompson.
