Staff and residents at Cherry Trees Care Home in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, welcomed the year of the tiger with an oriental banquet and Chinese New Year activities.
Inspired by the Chinese tradition, the home was decorated with bunting and the resident’s homemade hanging red lanterns. Residents Helen Moakes and Joan Leadbeater thoroughly enjoyed building the beautiful lanterns and gifting lucky red envelopes to their fellow residents and carers to wish them “sun nin fai lok” (Happy New Year). Traditionally offered with money inserted inside the ornate red pocket, envelopes are typically gifted to children and elderly people on important occasions, such as Chinese New Year, as a way to send good wishes.
Later on, Helen took the lead as Head Chef while she cooked a lovely Chinese inspired meal for the rest of the home, which included egg fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, stir fried noodles and an assortment of prawn crackers, spring rolls and prawn toast.
