Level 3 diploma Plumbing and Technology students from Keighley College recently visited Barratt Homes’ Saxon Dene development in Silsden to get a first-hand feel for their future careers.
14 students, aged 17 upwards met with the site team to see the theory they’re learning in the classroom put into action by discovering more about working on a live construction site. The students were invited by the five-star housebuilder in a bid to inspire those considering a future career in housebuilding.
As part of the visit, Site Manager at Saxon Dene, Martyn Buck, shared his expert insight into housebuilding processes and other areas of the students’ course of study. The students then explored the development on a guided tour to see how the housebuilder incorporates plumbing systems into its homes and to see these systems in situ.
Martyn Buck, Site Manager at Saxon Dene, commented:
“We were delighted to welcome students from Keighley College to Saxon Dene and give them insight into a live construction site, helping them get a feel for the practical elements of their course. It’s important that we support the communities in which we build and education is a big part of that. We want to show people of all ages that housebuilding is a rewarding career that is available to them in their local area. Inspiring the next generation of construction workers will also help tackle the skills shortage the industry has faced over recent years.
James Horne, Plumbing Course Leader from Keighley College, commented:
“Our students have a keen interest in learning all they can about the plumbing industry and being able to visit live sites is really beneficial. Many of our students are hoping to establish successful careers in this area when they finish college, so visiting Barratt Homes’ Saxon Dene site to see systems being created and put in place was a great experience for them. We’re grateful to the site team for showing the students around and for being so helpful when answering their questions.”
