Five-star housebuilder David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East recently invited 40 children from Clifton With Rawcliffe Primary School in York learn about the importance of protecting and preserving wildlife in the community, this autumn. As part of the activity, the housebuilder took the pupils on a tour of its Gold Standard RSPB wildlife-friendly garden at the nearby Fairfield Croft development in Skelton.
The friendly team at Fairfield Croft invited the KS2 Forest Friends Club and Eco Council from Clifton With Rawcliffe Primary School to take part in a morning of educational fun, showing the green-fingered pupils how they can take simple steps to protect the hedgehogs, birds, bats, butterflies and bees in and around York, especially with winter fast approaching. The morning began with a wildlife talk from David Wilson Homes’ Technical Coordinator, Andrew Tute, followed by a tour of the garden’s wildlife-friendly features including a hedgehog highway, scented garden, deadwood feature, bee box and bat box before ending with a practical planting activity for all of the children.
As part of the activity, each child was invited to take part in a wildlife colouring competition, highlighting the creatures that the children can expect to see in their local community this autumn. Upon submitting their entry, each child will receive a cuddly toy animal to take home and the winning entry will be framed in the sales office at Fairfield Croft.
Andrew Tute, Technical Coordinator at David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East said: “We had great fun with the pupils at Clifton With Rawcliffe Primary School, and we’re really pleased to have had the opportunity to inspire the children to take simple steps towards protecting wildlife in their own gardens and local spaces. We hope that the children were inspired by the activities and we look forward to seeing the school’s very own wildlife-friendly garden in the future!”
Gill Johnson, Business Manager at Clifton With Rawcliffe Primary School, commented: “We’d like to thank the team at Fairfield Croft for a fantastic morning of practical education outside of the classroom. All of the pupils in our KS2 Forest Friends Club and Eco Council have a keen interest in learning new ways to protect the environment and they thoroughly enjoyed every second of the wildlife-friendly garden activities with the team at Fairfield Croft. I’d also like to extend a huge thank you David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East for their generous donation towards our own wildlife-friendly garden.”
The activity is one of many undertaken by the five-star housebuilder, as part of its on-going partnership with the RSPB. For the last four years, Barratt Developments, which includes both the Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes brands, has worked in collaboration with the organisation, with both parties working together to agree best practice on the types of plants and shrubs to use in gardens, the ideal times in the year to survey local species, and how to make good use of already existing natural features within the new build developments.
Located in the popular village of Skelton, David Wilson Homes’ Fairfield Croft development is a luxury collection of homes in a range of semi-detached, terrace and detached designs. Just four miles from York City Centre, and surrounded by green open-space, the development offers the best of both worlds, making it ideal for both first-time buyers and families alike.
